Stork Tower Berching
This seven-story, square tower with a broken pyramidal roof is the tallest in the city. It formerly served as an ammunition depot for the civic guard, which is why it is also known as the Powder Tower. Around 1805, the day laborer Joseph Sautner acquired the tower. It is also called the Stork Tower, as a nest of that kind adorns its summit. The regulation of the Sulz River between 1920 and 1923 deprived the storks of their food source. Consequently, it is a source of great joy whenever a pair of these magnificent birds does settle here and successfully nests. This gives rise to its third name, "Frog Tower," referring to the frog remains the storks would toss down. Built in the 15th century, between 1464 and 1496.
