Schachten/forest pastures
The territory of the “Schachten” (clearings in the Bavarian Forest) is along the border with the Czech Republic for a stretch of approx. 15 km. Most “Schachten” can be found in the municipal district of Lindberg and Frauenau and used to serve as pasture land, like the alpine meadows in the Alps. The grazing has been revived to some extent. The generally isolated trees, some of which are ancient, were used by the herdsmen as a shelter for the cattle against the sun and the rain. The Latschensee lake is between the Kohlschachten and the Hochschachten in a moor area with unique flora and fauna and can only be accessed by a board walk.
