The quiet forests east of the B2 federal road conceal a magnificent natural backdrop: the quarries close to Wernsbach. Dark, weathered crags, sandy fields dotted with bushes, and brightly veined stone arches surrounded by lofty, gaunt pines evoke a world of fantasy. For centuries, the people of Mauk and Wernsbach secured their income mainly by forest work and by breaking castle sandstone blocks.
