Furth im Wald is situated in the Bavarian Forest on the border with the Czech Republic. It is surrounded by the Bavarian Forest mountains of Gibacht (934 m) and Hoher Bogen (1073 m) on the Bavarian side, and by the Cerchov (1032 m) on the Bohemian side. “The historical townscape demonstrates the role that the town has played as a “gateway between Bavaria and Bohemia”. The “Stadtturm” (town tower) – the town’s landmark – is also located here. It is situated in the heart of the town on Schloßplatz and was built on the site of the former palace, which burnt down in the town fire of 1863. The local Landestormuseum is housed in the Stadtturm and its adjacent buildings.
