Basalt hill of Hoher Parkstein
The last volcanic eruption took place about 23 million years ago. With the passing of time the hill was formed as a result of erosion. Today an impressive basalt rock face with rock columns attests to the original eruptions. At the top of the hill there is a viewing platform with a breathtaking view of the Oberpfalz (Upper Palatine) Forest. A hillside church and ruins of the former fortress complete the picture.
