Allio Tower Berching
The defensive tower is part of Berching’s fully preserved historic fortifications in the Altmühltal Nature Park. The structure dates back to the 13th century. The square building is topped by a pointed spire that resembles the pointed-crowned helmet worn by medieval *Landsknecht* mercenaries. The coat of arms on the exterior facade points to the town's former owner—the ecclesiastical ruler of Eichstätt. Well-preserved arrow slits allowed defenders to attack—from all directions—any assailants who had managed to penetrate the town moat. Situated right by the river crossing (over the Sulz) and the park, the building offers numerous picturesque views.
